...in which I actually get some sewing done!! I made the conscious decision to crack on with Emily's quilt this week...I knew we were going to be eating "Out of the Freezer" for the majority of the week (As in eating all the frozen 'other halves' of the meals cooked in the last fortnight or so...) which meant I would be freed up to sew!!
The first job I had was trimming and pressing all the charm squares...which didn't take as long as I thought it would...
Then, because the stitches I had put into each little "Row Bundle" had come un-stitched...I had to look back here..to see the order Emily had chosen...after mixing up Alex's Pillow Mat order a wee bit, didn't want to do the same with the quilt!!!
Then came the making of "Row Bundles" again...All labelled and ready to sew...
I have decided to sew the squares together using my machine...as far as the quilting goes later on, am undecided as to whether hand stitching would be better, and something I can do in the evenings whilst sat watching tv...or if the machine and straight quilting would be better...
The first row complete!! May not look like much to you guys, but to me, it is the first row of the first quilt I've ever made...so was feeling pretty pleased at this point!!!
...Then came more...
...and more...
...Until all 12 rows were stitched and ready to join!!
I re-labelled them...just in case...
...and got to work pinning and joining...
...and pressing seams in between...
This is "The Hub" where all my sewing action currently goes on!! Hubby has put a desk up in our loft room for me, but I feel too far away up there, so for now am more than happy to stay downstairs, where my machine, materials and general "Crafty Items" have a cupboard all to themselves...plus, most of "The Action" happens when everyone else is at work or school!!
...and just as I was getting into the whole sewing rows together thing...the phone rang and I was off to work for the afternoon...
...But I did manage to get 1/3 of the way through the joining process...
...and am also very chuffed with the neat and tidiness of the seams!!
...so what next...joining the other 8 rows on...then the work really begins...trimming, basting, quilting and binding!!! Scary things indeed!!! For now though, I will leave you with the fabrics Em quite fancies around the squares as a border...
Looks amazing, such pretty colours! I would recommend machine quilting as there are lots of straight lines to follow, it should be pretty simple. Unless you are going on for a full on quilting pattern of course!

DeleteI'm not s bit fan of really obvious quilting, although I know lots of people think this is the best bit. I usually stitch in the ditch, but there are loads of great examples on Flickr etc of more imaginative quilting.
